We were not quite sure whether the festivities will be the day before or the day after Chinese New Year's Eve. We chose the day after and I think we chose wrong. Past photo ops were made on the day itself of the New Year but it seems the crowd moved to the day before because of activities organized by the local government (including the pedestrianized Ongpin St.). At least we were able to join RedDot's GE Chinese Photowalk and got a good breakfast and pointers on the What and the Where of Chinese New Year in Binondo. Thanks to RedDot and GE for the well managed photowalk and contest!

I am actually disappointed with the whole atmosphere of Chinatown in Manila (whether or not it's Chinese New Year or not). There is just too many people, traffic, things, clutter and everything that it really doesn't feel like Chinatown. I compare to Chinatown in Singapore for example... even if it's not Chinese New Year, they have much more lanterns hanging and other Chinese decorations around the area compared to Chinese New Year in Manila's Chinatown! Despite our general disappointment, I made do with the photos I took as I shoot rarely and I don't want a photo trip to go to waste.

The morning was not a complete waste though; my wife was able to buy some good food and fruits at cheap prices around the area and we were able to eat a good Chinese meal as well. Thanks again to RedDot for their strong support to various activities of photographers in the Philippines!

Sky100 Observation Deck

Baby + Stroller around Hong Kong is real tough but one place that we would surely recommend for people traveling like us is the Sky100 Observation Deck! The Sky100 Observation Deck is located on the top (100th) floor of the ICC (International Commerce Centre) Building. It is the tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong and offers a 360 degree view of the city below!

I was pondering whether to go to Victoria’s Peak with my family and thought that it would be a bit difficult traveling so far with a baby and stroller in tow. My wife also visited the Peak not long ago and was not eager to re-visit so soon. I read about Sky100 on the internet and saw some flyers at the airport. It was inside a building and beside a mall; these two reasons were actually enough for us to decide to try to go as indoor malls are the best place to roam around with a baby in Hong Kong.

We road the MTR and exited at Kowloon Station. After exiting the station and entering the connecting infrastructure, we immediately noticed less people and a very luxurious feel. This was actually the Elements Mall which had luxury shops and high priced restaurants left and right. The mall was definitely high end; even the benches around the mall where covered in expensive looking cushions and you can also see different displays of artwork at various parts of the mall. Definitely not the place to shop when on a budget but a good place to roam around as there was definitely less people and there were places where you can rest comfortably.

We then walked through the mall towards the ICC Building where well dressed and mannered staff guided us from buying the ticket and riding the very fast elevator up towards the 100th floor. The elevators were quite fancy with digital displays, futuristic lights and even the ceiling had an LCD monitor displaying clouds as well.

The Observation Deck was also very luxurious and spacious. The decorations were top notch and there were various photo locations of interest for tourists. We visited late afternoon to be able to see both the day and night skyline of Hong Kong from above. There were some snacks and drinks for sale at the top; overpriced of course but nothing too horrible.

Some say that Sky100 is even better than Victoria’s Peak especially if you take into account travel time, weather, etc. I haven’t been to Victoria’s Peak (or haven’t been since I was 9?) so I can’t say myself but Sky100 is definitely worth your time and I have to say we (me, my wife and baby) had the most fun there during our time in Hong Kong (not including our stay in Disney of course :P).

BENITO HOTEL

We stayed at Benito Hotel for 2 nights. The hotel rooms were quite small and it was a big shift coming from our previously spacious hotel room at the Disney Hollywood Hotel. Nevertheless, the price was very affordable for a very strategically located hotel in the middle of Tsim Cha Tsui, Kowloon. The Hotel is just 10 seconds from the MRT station (Tsim Cha Tsui Station), 30 seconds from street filled with small chinese restos (Haipong Road) and seconds away from kfc, mcdonalds and yoshinoya as well!

After doing some errands at Central, Hong Kong, we went into a restaurant to eat and rest but unfortunately they only had their breakfast menu available. It was interesting though; instant noodles with added real meat, scrambled eggs and bread as a breakfast set meal! We also ordered toasted bread with condensed milk!

MTR SYSTEM

It was quite a challenge with a baby and a stroller while using the MTR System. Many of the MTR exits did not have an elevator and sometimes not even an escalator for wheelchairs and strollers. Inside the stations, most had elevators for wheel chairs and strollers but the hard part was finding them! Usually they are hidden in some nook and getting there takes a lot of walking. We would often just cheat and use the escalator despite knowing the risks. The MTR was pretty crowded and at particular stations (like Central) that are transfer points to other MTR lines, the stroller was a bit tough to handle through the thick crowd.

Overall, the MTR System was pretty good and information (in English) was available so as to make the process relatively convenient. It would not be practical to demand elevators everywhere especially given the limited space on Hong Kong streets. Traveling there with a baby and a stroller is not impossible; but 2 pairs of hands is a definite requirement!

CANTON ROAD

The luxury store on Canton Road were gigantic! What surprised me is the long lines outside each store just to get in. I know that some of these brands are cheap in their home countries (like in France or Italy) but not here in Hong Kong. The tourists and locals here sure are wealthy!

FILIPINO COMMUNITY

We went into the World-wide Plaza near Central, Hong Kong to check out the Filipino Community and were quite amazed. Saying that the area was Filipino was truly an understatement. You could easily think that you are in the Philippines when you enter the mall area of the building. There were at least 8 stores selling cooked food like the local carinderias here. There were small convenience stores that sold 95% Filipino goods from small snacks to cosmetic products. Most of the personnel of the stores were Filipinos as well. Even the posters advertising stuff such as money remittance and mobile phone charges to the Philippines were in Tagalog (Filipino Language)! Nearby is a Giordano store that had Tagalog ads as well; greeting Filipinos “Maligayang Pasko” (Merry Christmas). Outside the mall is a Jollibee store as well; something Filipinos definitely can’t live without!

I love trying out the exclusively local dishes of McDonalds' and KFCs that we find abroad.

My wife even brought home a piece of the Oat so Sweet Chicken… it was pretty good!

HONG KONG TRIP

I thought our 2011 Hong Kong trip was pretty successful. It was our first trip with the baby and first plane trip with the baby as well. The whole trip was tiring but definitely worth it. The two days at Disney was definitely fun, while the last two days in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island were interesting and enjoyable as well. Congratulations to us and to our baby Josh for a successful and fun trip!

Disneyland Hong Kong 2011

I was finally able to visit Disneyland Hong Kong, the nearest Disneyland to my home country (Philippines). I have been to Disneyworld in Orlando (1994?), Disneyland in Los Angeles (1997?) and Euro Disney in France (2009); comparatively, Disneyland Hong Kong was very much smaller. The whole layout of the place is roughly the same ofcourse (adventureland, going towards fantasyland, etc) but the park was distinctly much smaller than the others I’ve been to.

This came as a surprise as I heard the news back when this park first opened about how people were climbing the walls into the park (Chinese new year holiday) since Disney closed the entrances due to too many customers! I thought that they would have expanded the place much by now… later on, I found out that Disney Shanghai was coming! Wow! Now that would surely be designed as a gigantic park!

The latest addition to the park: Toy Story Land!

Although smaller, Disneyland Hong Kong has many advantages (especially for me):

1. The food, though pricey as with all Disneyland parks, is mostly Chinese/Asian food! Something that works well with my stomach… especially when you’re tired of walking the whole day! Steamed rice and hot soup for me!

2. The trip from Philippines to Hong Kong is very short (1.5 hours) and quite affordable.

3. Disneyland in Hong Kong is very near the airport and even has a MTR (subway station) just outside it. It’s really very convenient to go visit.

Disadvantages are plenty though as well:

1. The Chinese (both in HK and from the mainland) are very efficient people and time is very important for them. Sometimes this value for time leads to shoving and cutting lines and although they don’t get offended as they are used to such things, many of the other visitors find such behavior a bit distasteful…

2. Some of the stuff is in Chinese, but everyone and everything definitely has an English version. Euro Disney was worst; many things were just in French!

DISNEY HOTEL

We stayed at the Hollywood Hotel inside the Disney compound. It’s the cheaper hotel compared to the Disney Hotel but has the same free bus ride to the park every 10 minutes. We stayed only one night as the room rates were quite pricey. We paid around USD 370.00 for one night and two 2-day tickets. What we did was we arrived in the hotel early (10am) left the bags at the lobby, went into Disneyland, came back in the afternoon to check-in and rest a bit, and went back to the park. The next day, we checked out early, left the bags again at the lobby and enjoyed Disneyland for another whole day!

I had my 1+ year old son with me so a night at a Disney hotel was a worth it experience (for me as well :D). Otherwise, I think the nearby hotel connected to the Citygate Outlet Mall is a much strategic move (I saw a Novotel there).

1) Its just two stops by MTR Subway (Tung Chung Station to Disney Station)

2) The food/water is cheaper for dinner or at least breakfast (bottle of water in Disneyland costs USD 2.00 each.

3) You will be visiting the Outlet Mall anyway (since they really have cheap stuff) and since you saved on the hotel, you can stay two nights instead of one and be much more comfortable than bringing bags up and down the hotel and leaving them in the lobby.

Nevertheless, it was my first time in a Disney hotel and was a very nice experience that everyone should try even just once.

DISNEY IS ALWAYS A FUN PLACE TO BE

As with my Euro Disney experience 2 years back, going into Disneyland is like becoming a kid again! You have your main street, your decorated food stalls, your city hall, your costumed staff; everything is so real! It’s like living in a fantasy world! To me and to most people, Disney will always be the Merriest Place on Earth!

These Mischievous Elves were really friendly! They saw that josh was squinting because of the sunlight, so they covered the sun with their gingerbread man to get a good shot! Disney Staff are just the best!

Having madeextensive blog entries on Puerto Princesa from my last trip back in 2008, Iinitially decided not to make a blog entry for this 2011 return trip. Therecent victory though of the Underground River as one of the new 7 wonders of the worldprompted me to write something at least about this remarkable city.

Armed only with myOlympus XZ-1 (a DSLR is just too tiring to lug around for a real vacation); Imade do and felt that I got some pretty decent shots off. We went on the normaltour of the area: Honda Bay Island Hopping for the 1st day, Underground River for the 2nd day and skipped only the citytour and the firefly watching (night tour). I actually wanted to go on thefirefly watching tour as I have never seen it; but we were too tired alreadyfrom the day trips.

The repeat tour ofthe Underground River was also interesting as this time I got adifferent boatman navigating our tour; different boatman, different stories!This particular boatman has already brought two or three presidents through theunderground caves!

We had dinner ata KaLui Restaurant, really the bestplace to eat at Puerto Princesa. We actually had no reservation and was lucky tobe able to get a seat. No shoes were allowed in the dining area so as not todamage the beautiful native wooden floors. The architecture and decor was ofnative design and was really first class.

Puerto Princesa is truly a remarkable city as it truly stands outfrom other cities in the Philippines (cleanliness, discipline &development). Though definitely still a very small city (a forest city in factthey call themselves), I can see Puerto Princesa (and all of Palawan) improving and growing into a perfecttourist spot for foreigners and locals alike. More power to Puerto Princesa City and congratulations to the Philippines and the Underground River for being part of the new 7 wonders ofthe world!

My family and friends (with their families too!) went off on a short vacation at the Estrellas de Mendoza Hotel Resort on the Laiya, San Juan, Batangas Beach Strip.

I believe this is the only high-storey hotel on the laiya beach strip and will probably lead others to develop more hotels on this strip as well. The other Laiya resorts would normally just have one to two storey structures that are designed like nippa-huts or beach houses.

A truly high class place with the new and big hotel and a very nice infinity pool beside the beach. The staff were well trained and served us very well with a smile. Surely not the cheapest place on Laiya but the amenities and the service is definitely good value for your money.

The Laiya beach strip does not have the best sand but is one of the nearest places from metro manila to enjoy the beach in a good resort. A pool should be a necessity when picking resorts on this strip to make up for the not so good beach conditions.

After meeting at Plaza Miranda for the registration, collection of payments, chit-chat and a group hug photo, the group of 50+ photographers moved on via the underpass towards the Muslim community in Quiapo.

GOLDEN MOSQUE

On the way to the Golden Mosque, we passed by the shop of one of the Muslim leaders that Grupo have discussed with previously. Here we purchased the necessary clothing that will be required for us to enter the Mosque. It was tougher on the females as they had to cover all exposed skin and their hair as well.

We all entered the Golden Mosque in teams of 10; this was the agreement with the leaders so as not to disturb the holiness of the place and also to avoid each other getting into the frame (of the shots). The same process was employed with the next two main photo locations.

After a good hour or so taking turns going inside the Golden Mosque and shooting subjects of interest in the mosque's compound, we moved on to our next stop: San Sebastian Church.

BASILICA OF SAN SEBASTIAN
Quiapo, Manila

The most beautiful church in the manila area (for me) is San Sebastian Basilica. I love metal and this church has tons of it… literally! The whole church was built in Belgium and assembled with bolt/nut/rivet using complex instructions upon arrival here in manila. This was the solution for the church to be able to withstand fire and earthquakes common in the Philippines. The designer was someone special as well; Eiffel designed this church, the same designer of the Eiffel Tower!

Despite my full admiration for the Basilica of San Sebastian, I honestly don’t like the light green colored paint used for the outside of the church. I would have preferred a more grayish color that would emphasize more the metal structure that San Sebastian truly is. Nevertheless, the Basilica of San Sebastian is certainly a magnificent structure; despite my opinions about the outside color :P.

SAN BEDA CHAPEL (Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat)

The last stop of our photowalk is the truly magnificent San Beda Chapel. Recently renovated, the San Beda Chapel was clearly the highlight of the photowalk. It was actually the first time I have seen or entered the Chapel and it definitely made all the walking in the rain worth it. The church was very solemn and quiet; the whole feeling of the church was comparable to some great churches I have been to in Europe.

We started our Pipho Bataan Photo Trip… eating! Unlike our previous Photo Trips, this one was definitely light, relaxed and much more enjoyable (at least for me). Clearly mistaken instructions though made our car miss the breakfast eat-all-you-can spot. (ehem, aids, ehem regie :P) Nothing can stop our eating though as we stopped at Vanessa’s Carinderia/Lomi House for some carinderia (street food stall) food. (kinda scary food if you ask me :p)

After meeting up, our convoy drived up Mt. Samat. The sky was generally overcast to our disappointment with some rare glimpses of good skies depending on your angle. After walking around the shrine and taking photos, we finally rode the elevator up the middle of the cross. Only upon entering the viewing deck (the left and right side of the cross) did I realize the real beauty of the Mt. Samat Shrine… the Cross was huge at 36 floors high! The viewing deck was quite big as well, at least 80 square meters (I would estimate). I delayed climbing to the top as the viewing deck seemed like such a small area when seen from the bottom; but after finally getting there, I regretted not going earlier as I had little time left to shoot from above! Shooting from the viewing deck was almost like shooting from a plane or helicopter due to the height to the cross and it being on the highest point of the mountain.

The Mt. Samat Shrine is truly amazing and more so because it is found here in the Philippines! Rarely have I been to Philippine government structures or tourist spots that invoked awe or surprise. What’s even more amazing is that the shrine (and probably the road up the mountain) was actually built during the time of the Dictator Ferdinand Marcos (30 years ago!). He may have plundered a ton of our money but he was definitely able to achieve many things as well. Off the top of my head, I couldn’t think of anything even similar to this made by presidents after Marcos.

We then droved down (some walked down) to the museum on the slightly lower part of the mountain. The museum was small but with very nice architecture. After a couple of minutes the group headed off to lunch near the afternoon photo location, Las Casas de Acuzar!

Pipho Bataan: Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

After the morning at Mt. Samat (click here for the blog entry), the Org Members of the Pinoy Photography Org www.pipho.org) our friends went down the mountain for some lunch at a nearby grill and then proceeded on to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar (http://www.lascasasfilipinas.com/).

Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is a collection of old houses from various places in the Philippines by the owner of San Jose Builders. The houses are purchased, disassembled and reassembled in the compound. The Genesis group approached them and eventually handled and made the place a resort as well.

Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar definitely lived up to its name. The name sounds very high class and the area (after seeing it myself) was no doubt the same. The place was well built with a definite organization to the re-construction of the houses. The streets were of cobblestone and the houses were well spaced in between fountains, statues and greenery. The whole area, including the houses, the bridge (yes there is bridge) and even the greenery were all well maintained with lots of employees dressed in old fashioned costumes taking care of the maintenance.

Interestingly, the accommodations were built inside the old houses! Not to fear though as the rooms and bathrooms are new and modern with giant split type aircons cooling the various floors.

After some rough estimates of income and costs, I think the place could not maintain itself without personal funding from the owner. The area was just too beautiful and well maintained to be funded only by the reasonable affordable rates that Las Casas had for both daytime and overnight guests. This is good though because as a tourist, you are getting much value for your money!

The weather that afternoon was not good (photographically speaking) with the overcast clouds and the lack of sunlight. We shot the whole afternoon while making do with the weather; but then the sunset came and the cloudy sky did give way for some good shots! Most of us had to rush over to the shore to shoot the sunset as most of us were not expecting the sunset to be any good that afternoon.

The sunset did show :) I'm no landscape photog but my friends got pretty good shots.

Some of us took the opportunity to shoot some night shots with the lit old houses and cleared up night sky. We had dinner at the restaurant inside the compound as food and drinks were not allowed to be brought into Las Casas. Despite the monopoly of the said restaurant, the servings were big and priced fairly. After dinner, we had some drinks and then most of us went to bed with plans for the sunrise the next morning.

Me and 2 of my friends did not wake up for the sunrise; It was planned though as we decided that we would rather get a goodnight’s rest and drink a bit more than photograph the next morning (4am call time!). Most of the others went to nearby Sisiman Bay while a handful stayed at Las Casas for their sunrise shots.

After breakfast, we walked around again in the compound; this time with the blue sky and the strong sun above us! It’s amazing how sunlight and blue skies can make almost any shot look pretty. The sunlight just makes colors burst and make the photo just that much more beautiful.

This Bataan Pipho Photo Trip was a much more relaxed version of our regular trips. We would normally leave at horrendous hours of the morning (1am?) rushing off somewhere for the sunrise and eating and sleeping on the fly. This time, I enjoyed very much the relaxed 8am meeting time and the comfortable living and eating situation. Though we get more things done with our regular trips, this relaxed one was exactly what I needed: a short break from the daily hustle and bustle of life and a chance to shoot as well!

Juris and Star Records had an exclusive advance release of Forevermore (Juris’ 2nd album) last Sunday. Fans can buy the album exclusively at The Block; a pre-release before the actual album launch.

Juris sang a couple of her songs from the first album and her version of “Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin” (also used as the theme song for the telenovela with the same name). She capped the afternoon with the heart moving song “Kahit ‘Di Mo Sabihin” written by Jonathan Manalo. She described the song to be as intense as “Di Lang Ikaw” (from her first album) and that both the songs seem to be replying to each other.

It was a fun afternoon and I was glad we were able to sneak the trip in our busy Sunday (we left the baby at home for a bit). Through all the hustle and bustle of life, it’s always nice to spend some time to catch up with old friends and support them especially during their important moments. I was also pretty glad to be able to use my camera again after more than a month! Congratulations Juris! Another successful album for sure!

A Taste of Shanghai (2011)

We were fortunate to have some time on our business trip during the night and on our last afternoon to be able to experience some of the sights and sounds of Shanghai. The business trip was actually to go to an exhibit which entailed much walking and so I did not bring my big camera. Armed with my Olympus XZ-1, I took some photos of some of the few areas we were able to visit during our stay in Shanghai.

What I noticed immediately on my first day in Shanghai was the blurry air… you can notice the low contrast of the buildings that you see in the distance. As the weather was not cold, this was definitely not fog but smog. This is most definitely the result of fast and massive industrialization in China’s recent history. What is good though is that they are doing their best at slowly reducing the damage to their ecology. Policies are being implemented and I hear that China is now the leader in advancing green technology! In Shanghai you will notice a lot of greenery, and well maintained at that! I could even boldly compare the amount of greenery to Singapore and other advanced cities.

The Jumeirah Himalayas Hotel is a 5-star luxury hotel that I saw everyday as I walked from the hotel to the trade show. Jumeirah is the same company handling the 7-star luxury hotel (Burj Al Arab) in Dubai. I found the architecture and design very interesting.

The Bund (Wai Tan) or Zhongshan Road

We were able to walk along the Wai Tan on our second night at Shanghai. The Modern Shanghai buildings on the Pudong side (across the river) were very impressive. We saw the lights of the Shanghai Space Needle and the Shanghai World Financial Center (4th tallest in the world). On the otherhand, the Puxi side (where Wan Tai is found) has the old buildings built and designed by the Europeans. These antique buildings are well restored and fully functional as well.

Nanjing Road

Nanjing Road is a pedestrianized street in Puxi, Shanghai. The atmosphere of the place felt much the same with Wang Fu Jing pedestrianized street in Beijing.

Thumb Plaza

We went a couple of times to Thumb Plaza for some of our meals and walking around. It was an open type mall where there are plenty of open areas to walk around in. Unlike the malls in the Philippines (main recreational area in the Philippines) which are generally in closed buildings, the main recreational areas in China (and other countries) are open parks, plazas and pedestrianized roads. It’s cheaper on the air-conditioning and more natural I would say. Heavy downpours in the tropical Philippines though can make open plazas and parks less successful though.

We saw a small Catholic Church across the Thumbs Plaza; the Immaculate Conception Church. The church was pretty new (only 6 years old) with a simple design inside and out. I am not too religious but it was a good feeling to see a church and some catholic presence in the very business/economic atmosphere of China.

Yuyuan Cha Ye Tea Shop

Tea shops in China have an very interesting sit down and taste marketing strategy. They use various tea implements and specialized tea tables to market and sell their products. My uncle purchased some tea for his friend costing RMB 3,000/kg or USD 480/Kg! The most expensive tea according the staff there is worth USD 10,000/Kg!

Maglev Train & the Pudong International Airport

We took the Maglev train to the Pudong Airport from the city. I honestly wasn’t fully impressed as the train station looked like any normal train station really (what was I expecting, spacemen?). Also, the train looked the same as other high speed trains (I think I am expecting too much from China :P).

This train is actually only one of three Maglev trains servicing the public in the world! We traveled 30km in just 7 minutes at a top speed of 301 kph. The advertised no-vibration though was definitely not true. I definitely felt vibration during the ride. I read that the Maglev can run upto 450 kph; the Chinese run them at 300 kph only (optimal speed) to save on costs for maintenance.

Pudong International Airport was gigantic with very modern non-Chinese décor/design. We noticed though that they turned down or off the condenser of their air-conditioning; it was actually uncomfortably warm at the airport. It was pretty cold outside at the low 20’s (degree C) and they probably turned off the condenser to save on electricity. I guess you can take away the Chinese from the décor/design but you can’t take the Chinese (frugal values) out of the operations! :p

Scrumptious Shanghai!

Business trips give little time for photography and touring the area but one thing for sure there is no lack of is the food. Our friend made sure that we had a great experience in tasting some of the varieties of food in China.

Though Chinese food in general is popular everywhere, there are actually many varieties. These varieties formed from necessity (what was available) and the culture of the various provinces in China. The huge land area and population has made the various types of Chinese food quite different from each other.

Breakfast in China (Central & Eastern China Style)

We had breakfast at a nearby breakfast place serving standard Chinese breakfasts. Most people would order a bowl of Soy Milk with a choice of sweetened, UNsweetened or another type was like the Japanese Miso Soup. Fried bread stick (Youtiao: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youtiao) is a natural compliment that acts like cereal to milk in western breakfasts. You could also have your standard Noodle Soup together or aside from the Soy Milk, though most order the Soy Milk setup.

Various Items can be added to this Soy Milk setup. Some of the options are: 1) Stuffed Rice Rolls (similar to Japanese Sushi but bigger) 2) Dumplings of various types 3) Chinese Pizza 4) Fried Egg or some type of egg.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find the Rice Porridge which is the staple in our Southern Chinese Breakfast Cuisine back home in the Philippines.

We ate at a Chinese fast food restaurant at Thumb Plaza. Their main dish was dumplings but I think we over bought the appetizers! Duck liver, pickled duck, beans mixed with vegetables, peanuts and century egg! We also had a burger steak on a hot plate with dumplings (interesting Salisbury steak meal) and some soup. I thought the food was so-so, interesting but the food was definitely fastfood material.

I had some coffee with another friend at a nearby coffee shop, 99 Coffee Bar. I had my usual Iced Americano and it was pretty good. My body was also craving for the espresso type coffee that we readily have available at home. The décor was pretty tacky, but I wasn’t complaining as the coffee was pretty good.

North East Chinese Food!

Our friend treated us to some interesting North Eastern Chinese Food! The food was quite different from the standard Southern Chinese Food that I am used to in the Philippines. Firstly they don’t use sauces (OMG! The blasphemy! -my sister who studied in Singapore would probably exclaim :P). Secondly, unlike the southern area where rice is more common; north eastern cuisine uses dumplings as fillers instead.

We had some Chicken Herbal Soup (I don’t know the name but the herb/spice seems familiar; I think my grandmother uses it some times in her cooking), Chinese Pizza (some sort of pita bread baked with vegetables), a soy based tofu dish (similar to Mapo Tofu but using a different sauce), Sweet Sour Pork Ribs (with lots of tendons) and the Northeastern version of Fajitas (see photo as I’m not good at describing food :p). As you would notice I am inventing the names of the dishes. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to note down the Chinese names and I am truly unfamiliar with the dishes to describe them properly.

The whole experience was definitely interesting... even though the restaurant cooked everything a bit salty for my taste; the dishes were definitely something new!

Our last meal (mid-lunch and dinner) in Shanghai City was at Queen Restaurant at Thumb Plaza. It was an excellent meal to end the trip as the food was amazing. I have eaten my share of Chinese food (being Filipino-Chinese) and I can say with certainty that the food at Queen Restaurant is comparable to the best Chinese Restaurants in the Philippines. The presentation, quality and more importantly the ingenuity was definitely present in their dishes!

The Sotanghon had a twist of chopped fish mixed in; making the texture and flavor so much better. The Vegetable Buns had a fried crunchy sesame shell in the bottom. The Sticky Rice Wrapped in Lotus Leaf has salted egg inside; certainly a very tasty twist! Even their Taro Cakes had an extra touch of ingenuity by using strips instead of mashed taro to give that small extra texture bonus for the taste buds. And one of the best was the beancurd with mushroom and oyster sauce; the beancurd had a yellowish tinge with just the perfect texture and consistency!

Nuvali “I Love Earth” Photo Contest!

Pinoy Photography Organization (PiPho) will be assisting Nuvali in their photography activity on the May 28^th and 29^th, 2011. This will be the last activity of a month long “I Love Earth” event promoting development and nature moving forward hand-in-hand.

The photography event will consist of 3 workshops (a birding workshop on the 28^th, basic photography and travel photography on the 29^th) and 2 photo contests! The Open Category photo contest and the On The Spot (OTS) contest on the 29^th. Though landscape photography is something I know almost nothing about, I joined a couple of PiPho Org members in shooting at the Nuvali last Sunday (May 14, 2011) just to show support to our Org. I was telling one of my friends how I wouldn’t know what to shoot or how to even compose using a wide lens properly without peeking through the view finder first.

The sky that afternoon wasn’t so bad; there were nice cloud formations though some parts of the sky were overcast. I’m sure my friends had tons of success shooting while I was just stumbling around trying to look for my shots. And then sunset came and wow! The sky was beautiful! The golden light seemed to vaporize the overcast clouds. The sunset produced beams of orange light bursting out from behind the mountain. I didn’t even attempt to shoot the sunset as I didn’t want to waste my time with the little skill I have shooting landscape. I just took my time walking towards the commercial area while admiring the view.

We then met up, had dinner and judged the photo trip successful. Although I did not shoot any good photos for the contest, I was still able to get some shots for my own pleasure.

A Disappointing Flores de Mayo (2011)

A Disappointing Flores de Mayo

I was excited to shoot the Flores de Mayo at the SM MOA last May 1, 2011 as I haven’t shot a real photo event for quite some time. I reached the venue at a little past 2 o’ clock and met up with fellow Pipho Org members. A photo contest for the event with a cash prize has drawn a lot of photographers to the MOA loitering around in the area. The first thing I noticed was that the venue was still empty. The area for the event was cordoned off yet there was really still nothing on the stage; no activity of preparation whatsoever. I asked a lady giving out flyers for the event on the exact time it will start: she said “maya maya magstastart na” (a little bit later the event will start). Good thing we did not listen to her; we took off and had some nourishment at the fastfood area to cool off and rest.

We went back at around 3:30pm and still, only a couple of models can be seen waiting for their makeup and outfits. I was getting tired from lugging all my photo gear and the photo op was turning really turning sour. We were also not allowed inside the actual event area and the photographers were all limited to shooting from outside fences cordoning off the area.

We had a decent spot on the left side of the event area and we were trying to hold the area to get at least some photos. I kept on waiting until around 4:30pm and then I finally decided to give up… I just looked for my wife (who was shopping around the mall) and walked around with her.

We went back to the area at around 6:00pm to get some dinner and I was able to get some shots from the back right side of the stage as I was going towards the restaurant. While having dinner, I took some time away from the meal to take a peek at what was happening. They were finally leaving the stage after the judging and lining up for the parade (roughly 7pm).

I was really hoping to shoot the parade and it took them so long to get to that part. I wasn’t really interested in shooting the models on the stage as the level of creativity was limited; all the photographers would probably have the same shots. It was really dark when they finally started lining up for the parade and I just couldn’t get any decent shots.

I was really pissed at SM for deceiving us; it was obvious to me that they wanted to get more people in their mall earlier (2pm) to get them to spend more on food, etc. The actual event started 3 ½ hours late at 5:30pm! I think that just because you are giving away cash prizes doesn’t mean you should treat the photographers that way. I’m never going back to MOA to shoot their Flores de Mayo! It was really frustrating as I personally don’t have much personal/family time and allocating this time to shoot was a big thing for me. Wasting 3 ½ hours of my very little and valuable personal/family time was a real bummer.

All-in-all the day wasn’t a whole waste; at least I was able to get a couple of shots off and got some good bonding with my fellow Pipho Org members. I was also able to spend some time for some shopping and dinner with my wife which is rare now that we have more responsibilities.

I really hope my next chance to shoot will not be such a disappointment.,, I am now slowly learning which events I can trust to give me a good photo experience and which events will just turn out to be flat out disappointing.

A Wedding at the Baluarte de San Diego

My wife and I were invited to attend the wedding of her officemate Mercy to her longtime boyfriend Rolex. Upon reading the invitation, my curiosity peaked upon reading the venue of the wedding (Baluarte de San Diego Gardens). Although there are many places were you can hold a wedding in Intramuros, the Baluarte de San Diego Gardens is different as it is situated right beside the famous Intramuros wall! I immediately decided to bring my camera on the wedding day to do some shooting.

As I entered the gardens, I immediately felt the old gritty atmosphere of Intramuros and other Spanish structures that I have always loved. There is just something about ruins that make the love for history inside of me come out. I saw a staircase at the far end of the path from the entrance and immediately pulled my wife towards it to investigate. It was actually a staircase leading to the top of one of the corners of the Intramuros wall (the Baluarte de San Diego). The vantage point was excellent for shooting the couple, reception, guests, etc with a different downward angle. I was also able to find some good spots to shoot the Manila skyline together with interesting foreground elements meshing the old and the new in the photo.

The afternoon was pretty warm and all my exploring has made me perspire. I had to relax myself as I did not have an extra pair of long sleeves :P. Good thing when the ceremony started, the sun was much lower and the cool night air was starting to come out.

Again, I was not able to shoot properly as I couldn’t find a vantage point that would not interrupt the official photo and video crew. The Gardens were pretty wide and they were all spread out around and even above (on the Baluarte wall) the couple. I was also sweating still and was trying to control my movements to avoid more sweat that could just spoil my shirt, comfort level and my whole night (dinner included) :P.

I’m glad though that I stuck with my 1 body/1 lens (canon 85L) combo for shooting weddings as a guest. What I do is I just bring one lens attached to one body and hang it on my shoulder (no more bag). It’s just too much of a hassle to be carrying around a bag and having to watch over it.

The reception started off with ceremonial matters like the cutting of the cake, etc and some entertainment followed. The host, some friends of the groom and even the famous Aiza Seguerra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aiza_Seguerra) sang some love songs for the couple and the guests.

Dinner was very good and everyone seemed very satisfied. The caterer I found out later was Verleo (http://www.verleo.com/) and you can never go wrong with Verleo, price and quality-wise.

The Baluarte de San Diego is definitely on the top of my list for non-church/non-hotel wedding venues. The atmosphere is lovely and the setting can make your wedding photos one of a kind (with the old walls and pieces of equipment in the background… creative juices of the photographers will just ooze out naturally :P).

Juris Celebrates... Birthday Concert

Juris Celebrates… Birthday Concert

Me and my wife (with all the worries and troubles of being first time parents) were finally able to support our friend Juris by watching one of her shows. It has been at least 3 months since we last watched her perform live; and since it was also Juris’ birthday, I told my wife that we must go and see this one particular show.

Before the concert started, it was really like a big reunion of friends… It was a good chance to catch up even for just a bit with old friends (including the band and the family of Juris) and to see them again after quite some time.

Juris was welcomed to the stage to applause and she eventually talks about the difficulties and challenges of going solo and how she is celebrating not only her birthday but her first year as a solo artist. One of the songs she sung was The Climb by Miley Cyrus which she says helped her through the tough transition to going solo.

The show got better and better as the night progressed. Juris has improved so much a performer and her stage presence is superb. She introduced each song with her usual charm and the audience interaction was exceptional. The show in fact ended with most of the audience on their feet; moving to the music.

A very successful show and I must say Juris does have reason to celebrate not only her birthday but her success as a solo artist. She has truly developed from an exceptional singer into a top class performer with a stage presence capable of leading a large audience. Congratulations Juris and Happy Birthday to You!

I was asked by Raffy Yllana, a fellow Photo Club (PiPho) Member, to assist him in covering the Valentine’s Concert of his friend Director Ruel Santiago. It was a jam-packed concert; the stage was made smaller just to be able to fit in more people into the coliseum.

Martin was his usual jolly self, keeping the audience alive with his witty words and energy. Sarah played her part as the young girl (wanting to know what love is) who touched the audience’s hearts with her sweet words. They both performed a mix of sentimental songs, modern songs, old songs and even some dance performances.

Security was very tight and they did not allow photographers in front of the stage or even at the aisle in the middle. It was tough and I honestly had a hard time shooting. Too many people were given access passes and at least a hundred of them crowded the left and right side of the stage (the only places the security personnel allowed people to stay near the stage). We had to sneak in our shots and wait for the performers to look our way. We were at least allowed to stay with the official videographers near the sound controls at the back; but it was also tough as it was at least a basketball court’s length away and the angles were limited.

We did the best that we could and I have to say that I wasn’t happy with my output. I was affected much by the security, the crowd and my lack of experience. I have only covered a couple of large concerts; both were a year or two ago and both I shot with no pressure (as I wasn’t being paid to shoot!). Raffy (expert concert photog, I have to say) showed me his shots from his camera and I was very impressed. His experience made the whole thing easy for him. I, on the otherhand, was pressured and stressed the whole time. It was truly a learning experience; I thank Raffy for being kind enough to share some of his tricks and experiences with me.

I love shooting concerts and I still do but I realize that I really need a lot more practice. The night was honestly a bit discouraging… but nevertheless, I would still like to pursue the field of Concert Photography and hopefully I can make time in my busy schedule to shoot more concerts.

The concert was a success and nobody can question the talent and the performance that was shown that night. Martin still has his voice and showed the audience that he is truly THE Concert King. Sarah proved once again that she is the multi-talented young star who surely has a big future ahead of her.

A Beautiful Wedding at Paco Park

Sharon, the sister of my good friend Chester, got married to Gilbert last Sunday at the Paco Park in Manila. When I found out where the ceremony was going to be held, I immediately asked if I could shoot photos of the wedding as I have always admired Paco Park’s history and beauty.

First and last thoughts: “WHAT A BEAUTIFUL WEDDING!” Definitely one of the most beautiful I have been to. In a society where big stressful weddings are prevalent and many get married for the wrong reasons; the wedding of Gilbert & Sharon was truly refreshing. The groom and the bride were always smiling; you could see AND feel the joy that they are experiencing on their wedding day. Their actions and their facial expressions show how happy they really are and how they are truly enjoying their most special day.

Here Comes the Bride

A very big plus is that they kept the wedding very simple… aside from the principal sponsors there was only a bestman, maid of honor and some flowergirls. No more clutter of people in the entourage ranging from secondary sponsors to groomsmen/bridesmaids and even to junior groomsmen/bridesmaids. The flowers and decor were just right, not too much and not too little, perfect for a small wedding.

They picked a perfect place to have the ceremony as well. The St. Pancratius Church was small and perfect for their simple wedding. It had a very nice atmosphere as the chapel was very cozy and solemn. More importantly the guests were all real close family and friends. You can almost literally feel the loving emotions from the guests as the chapel was full! I couldn’t even maneuver to the other side of the chapel to take photos without having to pass directly behind the couple!

What make weddings truly beautiful is the love between the couple. Expensive and extravagant décor, dresses, food, location and etc. cannot compensate whatsoever. No amount of money spent can match-up to the smiles and the joy that you see and feel from a truly happy couple. Marriage is a union and the only thing that can make a wedding truly beautiful is a happy and joyous union.

I definitely got better shots and angles coming into the wedding as a photographer rather than a guest. Being a self-volunteered photographer only, I enjoyed taking the shots that I liked rather than losing time having to take shots that were required (group shots, etc). Given opportunity (and time), I would definitely volunteer myself into more weddings in the future.

The Unbelievable Feast of the Black Nazarene (2011)

The best words to describe my experience in shooting the Feast of the Black Nazarene (Pista ng Itim na Nazareno): UNBELIEVABLE and definitely UNFORGETTABLE. The whole experience was simply mind boggling from the traditions & festivities to the millions of people with just pure devotion. I couldn’t imagine the number of people even when I was right there looking from above all of them. My mind was just frozen in awe with the sheer number of people in a relatively narrow street. I just kept repeating “grabe ang daming tao” (“oh my (?), there are so many people”) over and over in my head.

The crowd at around 1pm (2 hours before the carvan arrived) this was when there was fewer people in the area :P

The Feast of the Black Nazarene is celebrated every January 9, 2010 in the city of Manila commemorating the more than 400 year old image of the mulatto Christ carrying the cross. In recent years, the Nazareno is brought to the Quirino Grandstand a day before and a vigil is held that night. The next day, it leaves at around 7 or 8am on a route towards the Quiapo Church (where it is normally in display). The distance is not that far (at most 5 km?) but the sheer number of people and devotees crowding the caravan makes the procession last at least 15 hours! They estimated the Nazareno to arrive back at Quiapo Church by 12 midnight!

I would normally not dare try to shoot at a relatively unsafe event (snatchers, pick-pockets, risk of getting trampled on, etc), but I found out that a good friend of mine grew up in the very Barangay (small town) near the Quiapo Church. He had lots of contacts and we even had a choice whether to shoot from the roof deck of the Fire Station, the 2nd floor of the Barangay Hall, or even from the roof the Barangay Hall!

We arrived early (10 am) and walk around a bit towards the church and through the crowd attending the mass and the street vendors. Although there were already a good number of people around the area, it was nothing compared to the actual procession. The first few Black Nazarene replicas started arriving (ahead of the actual statue) and we decided to take some lunch first at Ongpin to build-up our strength.

We chose the spot with the best angle (2nd floor of the Barangay Hall) and waited from 12:30 to 3:00pm for the caravan to finally arrive. The number of on-lookers and devotees on the streets below us were growing slowly in size as the caravan approaches. Even our 2nd floor location was getting more and more crowded anticipating the arrival of the Black Nazarene.

When the caravan finally came, time passed so quickly! I was shooting and taking videos while my mind was simply distracted by the amazing event that I was seeing right in front of my eyes! You could feel the heat from the sheer number of people, steaming up towards us at the 2nd floor. I couldn’t imagine how so many people could fit the pretty narrow street of C. Palanca. Though we didn’t have the angle to shoot the side of the Nazareno that was not covered by the cross, we still got a chance to shoot the various emotions and action that was happening. We had a good chance to shoot the people fighting for the ropes (the two ropes pulling the caravan), the people climbing on top of other people just to be able to touch the Black Nazarene, the crowd looking on from inside buildings or on the roofs, etc. Its funny how there was no ill-feelings despite the shoving and the slapping that was happening just to be able to hold the rope. In fact, the ropes were so much contested that I don’t think it is actually pulling the caravan anymore; in fact the caravan was moving at a snail’s pace. To move the procession forward, what happens is every now and then, the people on the caravan will instruct the thousands of people behind the caravan to push the caravan forward. They would shout, “1-2-3…” then everyone would push each other (and pull at the ropes supposedly) at the same time, moving the caravan forward.

Forget the photos and videos; the experience itself was just amazing! Even though I did not get to shoot the Nazareno properly and others probably have tons of better photos, it all does not matter to me. The experience alone is priceless and truly unforgettable. Big thanks to my good friend Charles and Viva to the Mahal na Poong Hesus Nazareno!

Me and my wife were finally able to watch Juris' gig after a long time (family matters, baby , etc). After at least 9 months, we were again finally able to meet Juris, the band and the new Jurism fan group!

It was a good night and the music was spectacular thanks to the sophisticated (and expensive) equipment of 19 East bar and grill www.facebook.com/pages/19-East/129785912106. We had to go home early though (a little before 1am) as we both had work and a baby to take care of.

Thanks so much to Carla (guest passes!), Juris and the band, Abi and the whole of the Jurism group. Hope to see everyone again soon!

KARACHI BOAT CLUB
The area near the Karachi Boat Club we stayed in was one of the safest in Karachi. The navy was nearby and i believe wealthy people lived in the area. The boat club was an interesting place, built in 1881 and with the old structure still being used, it was like going back in time! We had lunch there during our last day and there was a gathering of friends in the next room where i saw a group of well dressed distinguished gentlemen (buddies of our hosts) discussing and drinking beer/coffee while enjoying the December weather. I half expected my vision to turn black and white and grainy as the whole place seemed stuck in time... to better times probably in Karachi's history.

PAKISTANI FOOD WAS THE BEST!
This is probably the most important part of this blog post... The food was amazing. Being fed by locals was also an extra advantage as we got to taste both home and restaurant food. The tastes, spices, flavors and textures were just so different compared to what i am used to eating. I have been to my share of Arabic and Indian restaurants but the Pakistani food that i had in Pakistan was truly something. I actually gained 5 lbs at least in just 4 days there.

Our breakfasts at our friends' lovely home was mainly English with cereal, jams, toast, cheese (the home made cottage cheese was lovely) and spiced with Pakistani omelette! A mix of tomatoes and peppers like your standard omelette but with some hot flavor! Dried dates were also an interesting twist, adding some sweetness to the meal.

We had our first dinner at an Asian urban Thai fusion restaurant (mainly Thai and Chinese food) called Fuchsiahttp://www.karachisnob.com/fuchsia-restaurant-karachi.htm. According to our hosts, it was one of the four restos that had good food in Karachi aside from the hotel restos which had unmanageable security to pass through just to eat. The food was pretty good and although not good enough for my Southeast Asian stomach, the ambiance more than made up for what was lacking. The resto was decorated well and modernly, the only place in Karachi that i saw such type of interior design. Most of the buildings and houses were designed in more traditional designs and the color yellowish like what i saw before in my trip to Saudi Arabia.

Our last real dinner was at Bar-B -Q www.bbqtonight.com and the food was crazy good. We had Pakistani kebabs (Seekh & Bihari) which were spicy compared to it's Persian counterparts, Mutton Chops made from young lamb meat, Naan (one with sesame & a fried one) and Afghan food (rice and beef patty, both not spicy). We tried Pakistani deserts as well; Kulfi (sweet caramel like ice cream made from milk) and Kheer (made from rice, saffron, ground almonds, pistachios, etc). I particularly liked the Kheer which had a familiar (because of the rice i think) yet different taste and texture. We also had a glass of pomegranate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomegranate juice which was very healthy and is grown in much abundance in Afghanistan. Recently i have also heard of this fruit juice getting more popular back home and in the USA with it's strength as a powerful anti-oxidant and it's other healthy properties.

Pakistani Dessert: Kulfi

BASMATI RICE
I just found out from our friend how Basmati rice is healthier compared to other rice. The secret is in the cooking process: first you soak the rice in water for 30 minutes to make the grains nice and long (this part is unnecessary in making the rice healthier, but makes the rice look and taste better). Cook the rice then strain the water from the rice after cooking. Because of the basmati rice’s grain characteristics, it does not mash up together when it is cooked and thus can be strained after cooking. This straining process “washes” the starch away and thus lessens the carbohydrates in the rice you are eating. After straining, you wash with cold water and you then heat the rice a bit on a pan to dry.

LAST IMPRESSIONS
The airport was super strict. The strictest I’ve ever been to probably one of the strictest in the world! My luggage was opened twice (due to my metallic welding rod samples) and all luggages had to pass through at least two x-ray machines. Luggage was checked-in per person strictly for accountability as well. Though the soldiers and security were courteous and fair, the whole thing made me feel mighty uncomfortable.

At immigration it was funny how the lanes were classified: 1) Pakistani passport holders 2) foreign businessmen. I guess a lane for tourists would be useless :p. kidding, but I think rarely would tourists go to Karachi.

FINAL THOUGHTS
With my limited experience, I would have to say Karachi as a city looked like a mix of Arab and Asian. The structures and culture were very Arabic, but the atmosphere of the area and the situation of the people were pretty much Asian. The mentality of the people on the otherhand is a mix of both I must say; a mix of the religious fervor & traditional way of life with the Malay lifestyle and laid-back attitude. My analysis makes a little sense as geography-wise Pakistan is situated near the edge of Asia and very near the Middle East (border with Iran and Afghanistan).

Overall the trip was very interesting and very cultural as well. Stories and facts from our hosts also help me better understand the situation in Pakistan and the hardships of it's people. I truly wish the best for Pakistan and all developing countries. May we all mature from our corrupt governments and non-progressive mentality to be able to achieve the full potential of our wonderful countries and eventually be able to stand proud to the rest of the world.

My Karachi Experience (part 1)

I had to go on a business trip to Karachi (Pakistan) and I honestly did not know what to expect. The internet gave mixed reviews and the recent news especially the bombing near major hotels in Karachi (20 people dead) a couple of weeks ago was quite disturbing. We were glad that our friends asked us to stay in their home for both convenience & security as they said the hotels had so tight security it was unmanageable to get in and out.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
We arrived a quarter past eleven in the evening and the moment i stepped out of the plane I immediately noticed that the airport was pretty old. Though old, it was good enough to serve its purpose and it's actually at least 3-4x bigger than the airport i started the trip in (40+ year old NAIA 1 manila airport!) Proof of the size difference is the presence of walkalators: In manila NAIA 1, the walk distance to the gates were too short to warrant any walkalators at all!

I waited for my turn at immigration and was a bit nervous as immigration officers are always a moody bunch. This one asked if i had a ballpen and he acted like his had no ink left. He eventually borrowed my ballpen and never gave it back despite my long stares. I did not make a fuss as it wouldn't have been smart to start the trip fighting with immigration people but i did feel real bad. I kept thinking the whole night how my ballpen got stolen :p.

Last I remembered noticing that first night was the huge presence of crows (we could here them crowing that night outside our room). It just didn't feel good to have crows circling in the sky during the day and sleeping around the area at night.

KARACHI GROWS ON YOU
Despite these negative first impressions, Karachi sort of grew on me eventually. This was due also a lot because of the hospitality and the kindness to us of our friends/hosts who took care of everything for us. A part of me also feels for the people of Pakistan, being from a third world country myself with tons of frustrations and problems with governance and poverty as well. Pakistan is a beautiful country with abundant resources especially food (example: fruits they have all types as they have many areas of various climates), minerals, gems, oil, etc. They speak of a place up north where the mountains are like that of Switzerland if not for the lack of amenities and safety. Much like my homeland in the Philippines; the beauty of the country is marred by the corruption and poverty. To add, even the crows have grown on me. They seem like a decent bunch and crows in Pakistan have a nice gray color two-toned in with the black.

DEVELOPMENT
Developing Pakistan to become a better country is a tough task, even our friends say it would take at least 50 years as the mentality of the people needed to change. The roads were unmantained; traffic was light but chaotic. Donkeys delivering goods like cement and long pipes (I saw a camel or two as well), highly ornamented buses and trucks swerving into your lane, the locals climbing the barriers to cross to the other side. Garbage in small pieces and clumps can be seen on the side of the roads. Add to this the presence of a lot of rubble. I am not sure where these clumps of rubble came from but most likely from demolitions and such with the refuse just left behind. Karachi being naturally a desert, greenery is sparse except in the parks and a thin layer of sand/dust covered most stuff. All this I can get used to and to some extent already experience in the Philippines. What's tough is the fear of violence from simple holdups to major bombings. Military and police had check points everywhere but it's never enough when your up against both poverty and terrorism.

DECEMBER WEATHER
The weather in Karachi was just perfect when we visited. Just the right sunshine, humidity (from the nearby ocean) and a perfect 14-24 degree C temperature! A light jacket was all you needed if you are afraid of the cold, but a normal polo shirt will actually suffice even at night. This was also another factor that helped make Karachi grow on me during my stay.

My wife and I attended the wedding of a basketball buddy (turned good friend) Jayson and his fiancée KC. The wedding was held at the very historical San Agustin Church in Intramuros Manila. The church was recently renovated and has a beautiful new ceiling painted in the European style (painted as if there were pillars and columns when in actuality the whole thing is just flat).

I rediscovered the beauty of wearing a barong tagalong as it was the required attire for the occasion. My wife and I rushed of to Onesimus to get one the previous week and boy was I glad I did not insist on my coat and tie! Although the weather was not as warm and pretty suitable for formal wear, I noticed that when I am shooting photos I perspire more whether due to the effort I put in my shots or the weight of the camera or both!

The reception was held at nearby Palacio de Manila. The venue was very nice with a lot of parking at the back for the guests. KC did a good job in picking the decors and I particularly loved the ceiling and the ceiling ornaments. The place was the right size for the number of guests and with ample space for the dance floor and walking area. The food was excellent especially the beef; I wasn’t sure about the name as I was frantically trying to get our share (the usual me in any buffet :p).

The couple seemed very happy and I could see KC smiling all the time. Jayson was still ofcourse upto his small trying to be funny antics and poses for the camera :p. The whole atmosphere was nice and all the family and friends were in a happy mood. Both of them are very lucky to have each other; and we wish them happiness and long life together :).

Me and some photo buddies (zer, joey, chester) joined the BGC photowalk where we are tasked to shoot the 12 artworks around the BGC. It’s tougher now to schedule photo shoots with the rains and the added responsibilities of being a father and so I was lucky to squeeze in this shoot during a holiday. I dropped off my wife in the nearby market market shopping mall and we were all set. :P

To be honest, I only joined the photowalk so that I could get an ID to shoot inside the very nice Bonifacio Global City. I didn’t plan to go walking kilometers around the city to shoot the various art works but you know what… that is exactly what we did! The sky wasn’t so bad for shooting but it wasn’t blue skies and clouds. The wind was refreshing especially in the Burgos Circle area where we decided to stop and have some coffee.

I was requested to take some photos of Zeus, the Giant Schnauzer of my Auntie Chinita. Ofcourse his best buddy Hero (Maltese) did everything he could to steal the show :P

It wasn’t easy to shoot these dogs despite their trainers being around. The hot sun though good for photographs was tough on Zeus particularly with his very thick hair. The whole shoot lasted less than an hour only, as Zeus looked tired and would no longer cooperate.

We had continuous celebrations for the two weekends for my newest god child Ashton! The first one was for his Baptismal and the following week for his First Birthday!

The baptismal was held at the Santuario de San Antonio. We had a special merienda after at Ashton’s home prepared by his gourmet mom! The birthday celebration was held the following week at the Urdaneta Clubhouse. An assortment of entertainment was hired for both the children and the adult’s viewing pleasure. One thing I will always remember is the food! Probably the best food and the most food I have ever seen in a children’s party! Catering was done by Bizu and add to this are the assortment of appetizers like shawarma and Deryl’s (the mom) very own Hooked Fish and Chips !

After 2 or so years in the Pinoy Photography Organization, I was finally able to attend our anniversary! I missed the 2008 and 2009 anniversary for various reasons and this year I made sure to make time to support our organization despite the busy schedule and me having work on Saturdays.

The program consisted of guest speakers about various topics such as ownership of the photo (Atty Rod Vera), making video with dslrs (Raffy Yllana) and shooting festivals (Anton Sheker). Canon (our biggest sponsor always) also showed a presentation about their new products and their new packages for pros. Benro also presented their plans for the future and new very innovative products as well. Models (wearing Folded and Hung outfits) and Cosplayers were also hired for a paparazzi style photo shoot around the shopping mall.

All in all I think the anniversary was a success, though I feel that the members are getting busier and busier with other matters and so the organization is slightly less active now than before. Inspite of this, I feel that the organization is still strong and is just currently experiencing a plateau of sorts. I estimate by the last quarter of 2010 or at the latest by the start of 2011 Pipho Org activity will pick up and continue once again to go stronger and stronger every year. Congrats to Pipho, 5 years and going strong!

2nd Philippine International Hockey Tournament

2nd Philippine International Hockey Tournament

The 2nd Philippine International Hockey Tournament was held at the SM Mall of Asia. Teams from various countries joined the tournament and we were able to get some photo passes to shoot near the rink.

We were positioned beside the players in the bench area and so we were able to shoot without the protective glass of the rink hindering us. The players though took a lot of space inside the bench as they were wearing their very bulky hockey gears, standing around on skates and holding on to their hockey sticks. There was a particular team that does the “jumping over the wall” thing when they substitute players and the blade of the hockey skates swinging near me was not a particularly good nor safe experience.

One thing I learned… it’s tough to shoot hockey! Aside from the lights being pretty dim (mall lights with some additional lighting in the rink), we also had to battle the low contrast fog/mist that was always present 2 to 3 feet above the ice. The angles you get from being in the bench were the best the situation could offer but still very limited. The puck was also very small and moved very fast unlike a basketball! A shot of some players on the ice with no puck in the photo seemed pointless. The helmets and their uniforms made it difficult to capture emotions and also distinguish them from each other (aside from the jersey numbers at the back). It was cold though (because of the ice) and it was very different from my recent shoots where I’m under the sun or in a jam-packed gym.

Hockey is really a rough sport with plenty of body contact; it’s obvious that the Filipinos don’t stand a chance against the genetically bigger built Caucasians. The lack of a winter season here in our country matters much also as the puck-handling and the skating skills cannot match those of the foreigners. Add the lack of physical size, weak skating abilities and weak puck-handling skills and you get a lopsided score every time.

All in all the night was not a waste… we got a couple of good shots out of the three games we shot and it was a good experience. There were times when I stopped shooting and just watched; the sport has its appeal and it was fun watching the game live instead of on TV.

Me and some photo buddies were lucky enough to get one last chance to shoot outdoor before the rainy season finally settled in. We’ve been monitoring the weather the couple of days before the planned Sunday shoot and it wasn’t very promising. Most of the days were gray with overcast skies but there were some parts of the metro and times of the day when the sky was blue and the sun was shining. I woke up early (7am) and was happy to see the sun shining strong with blue skies and lovely clouds!

We rushed off to the La Mesa Ecopark and our first impressions were good. The entrance to the park was designed suitably and the park seemed organized enough (compared to other public parks in the Philippines). After getting our tickets (Php 50 / USD 1.00 per person), we walked a pretty long pathway towards the main areas of the park. Disappointment slowly set in as we saw the main areas; the park was a nice place to spend some time relaxing and being with nature, but definitely not a good place for a nature/landscape shoot. There were too many people around and almost no points of interests to shoot. Clutter in the area such as fallen leaves, branches, trash and scattered vegetation made it difficult to get a good clean composition for the photos.

We walked through most of the paths in the park looking for good vantage points or some things to shoot. We even walked inside the mini forest where I only shot 1 photo (a shot of my friends)! We did what we could with the situation and also spent some time experimenting with some infrared photography.

Upon exiting the main areas of the park, we spent some time around the lagoon boating area to try to look for additional areas to possibly shoot. There were many activity areas (paintball, rock climbing and zipline) aside from the boating but still nothing nice to photograph.

I was wondering the whole time we were walking around where the pre-nup (pre-wedding) shots that I’ve seen were photographed. The shots I saw came out pretty well and the area seemed nice to photograph for nature/landscape shots. Upon further analysis and thought, most of the shots I believe were photographed at the lagoon boating area with less clutter, less people and a nice wooden port area for the boats. Shooting with models is truly different than shooting landscape as you only need to find nooks and particular small areas with a good background and the shots will turn out fine.

All in all, the trip was not a success (especially photography-wise), but not a failure as well. It was still a new place and a new experience for me. La Mesa Ecopark is also, in my opinion, the best public park that Metro Manila has. The private funding has made a big difference in the organization, maintenance, facilities and amenities of La Mesa Ecopark compared to the other Metro Manila public parks that I have been to. In fact, I can confidently say that the other parks don’t even come close; at best they can only give half of what La Mesa Ecopark can offer.

I would just like to share this video of our trip to Europe :)

This video should have been:
1) shot better (with a tripod at least)
2) made with more clips (did not shoot enough video clips, video was more of an afterthought to photos)
3) edited better
4) compressed better

BUT ...I love this video :) because:
1) it was made and edited with my own sweat
2) the movie reminds me of good memories
3) AND my adorable wife :)

Eventually, prize winning photos/videos would mean very little compared to photos/videos of happy memories with family and friends. :)

A Day to Go Around Bacolod

We (Pipho Org) had a day to go around Bacolod before our flight back home to manila after shooting the Masskara Festival the previous 2 days. We hired a van, left the hotel early and headed off first to Mt. Kanlaon (volcano actually).

We approached the mountain from the side of the Mambukal (Mambucal) Hot Spring. The Mambukal Hot Spring’s water flows through seven waterfalls from the top. The first and second waterfalls (from the bottom) were pretty easy to reach but the 3rd one took much longer and on a tougher trail. We no longer went to the next waterfalls as time was limited and news from our friends from the Panay Digital Shooters was that they were all pretty much the same. In short, we were lazy. :p

On the way back from the mountain, we stopped by a bridge we saw on our way to the waterfalls and walked down to shoot the river below.

We stopped for lunch in a seafood market style restaurant, bought some pasalubong (travel gifts) in a very efficient pasalubong store (complete with box, straps and marking pens) and headed on to Balay Negrense. Balay Negrense is a house built in 1897, abandoned in the 1970s and then restored and inaugurated as a museum in the 1990s. The whole atmosphere inside the house gave me the spooks! All the old things added to the feeling especially the old clothes, beds and children's toys!

We then went to the famous (Bacolod) Ruins, formerly the mansion of a Portuguese sugar baron from Macao built in the early 1900s. The mansion was burned in World War 2 by guerilla fighters to prevent the Japanese from using the mansion as their headquarters. Although the roof, walls and floors were burned down, the concrete structure stayed intact. They say it took two days to burn the roof and the 2 inch wooden floors!

Finally, we headed to the airport where we ate some food, freshened up and contemplated on our successful and very enjoyable photo trip. Bacolod is truly a great place for tourists and photogs not only for their world famous Masskara Festival but also for the beautiful and interesting sights as well.

A Sinulog Side Trip to Carcar, Cebu

We (Pipho Org) traveled south of Cebu City to Carcar, a side shoot from our Sinulog Festival trip. We squeezed ourselves into a van and off we went! Carcar is famous for their chicharon (pork rinds) and we brought some home for pasalubong (travel gifts). We visited the Carcar Church (2nd oldest church in Cebu) and the old houses nearby. Carcar is only one of a few declared heritage towns in the Philippines that have maintained their town in their old glorious state. The sky was overcast though but we still enjoyed the shoot and more so the company.

On our way back, We passed by and shot at an uncommercialized beach. We also stopped and walked around a newly built sea-side/harbor commercial center enjoying the street food (fishballs and ice cream) and the fresh air.

I like how we make good use of our time in our festival shoots. We try to look for good places to shoot in between the festival activities.

Sinulog Festival 2009

The biggest and most commercialized festival in the Philippines… the Sinulog Festival! As mentioned before, festivals are much bigger events outside Metro Manila (due to culture, heritage, way of life, etc) and the place with the next biggest population and the next most developed tourist/commercial area is no other than Cebu City! Compared to the other 2 of the big 3 festivals (Dinagyang and Masskara), the Sinulog Festival has the biggest crowd with at least three times as much people!

Being the most commercialized, the Sinulog was the hardest to photograph as the crowd was too big and the photographers were too much. Photographers had to shoot paparazzi style and literally battle for position. Since the photogs were allowed inside the parade route, all the paparazzi style shooting disturbed and blocked the parade/performances. The organizers assigned in the parade route (undermanned and probably without clear instructions on what to do with all the swarming photogs) had a difficult time controlling the large number of photographers.

The Sinulog is also an Ati-Atihan festival (same with the Dinagyang, but not with the Masskara) which honors the Santo Nino brought over by Magellan from Spain hundreds of years ago. A main difference compared to the other 2 big festivals is that the Sinulog Festival contingents each have a queen which also competes in a pageant. These queens would compete in a pageant called the Sinulog Queen Night were they best each other in terms of beauty, costume design and special performance (together with back-up performers). The Dinagyang Festival is known for its energy, while the Masskara Festival for its color; for the Sinulog Festival I would say that it should be known for being the biggest event of the 3 and its beauty... both the costumes AND the queens! Cebuanas (Cebu local females) are considered by many as the most beautiful women in the Philippines.

As we (Pipho Org) were heading back to our hotel, the intersecting street of our hotel was cordoned off for the parade. Nobody in the crowd (which was 10-20 people thick trying to get a glimpse of the Santo Nino that will pass by) wanted to give way to let us pass as they are afraid that they will lose their position nearest the parade route. Tempers were rising and finally they opened a path for a man in a wheel chair to pass and only then were we able to muscle our way through the crowd behind the man in the wheel chair. (Actually I forget; I’m not sure if it was a man in a wheel chair or a baby in a stroller). People were pushing and shoving back into their positions and in my frustration I pushed back as well until I heard a lady shouting “wag kayong manulak may bata… may bata” (Don’t push, there is a baby here! A baby!) Only then did all of us stop pushing. Adding to the tempers was the rush as the rain started to pour and we wanted to get to shelter for the sake of our photography equipment.

The Sinulog was a massive event especially because of the tourists, a big population and all the Cebuanos (Cebu locals) coming home for the festivities. Even after the morning parades and events, people would still be in the streets, restos and bars until the wee hours of the morning having fun and laughter… with lots of food and alcohol ofcourse!

It was truly an interesting and special experience. This was the biggest festival I have ever been to and the fun and festivity (like the other festivals) are never lacking. Though I still prefer the Dinagyang and the Masskara, given the chance, I would definitely fly back to Cebu for the very big Sinulog Festival.

On our 2^nd day in very historical Rome, we had a walking tour to see the remains of the Roman Forum and the magnificent Colosseum (Roman Coliseum). We had a witty and very good tour guide that day (Paulo) who made the walking tour extra enjoyable. Tour guides have a big impact on the tour: preparations, instructions, accent, humor, appeal, charisma, etc. Although the actual place is more important than any tour guide, the way the day is scheduled and the way facts/history is presented have much effect on the perception and the feelings that the tourist brings home of a particular place.

Paulo tells us how Italians are only Italians every four years… and that’s during the world cup! According to Paulo, Italians actually hate each other! Romans, Venetians, Florentines, etc: a person from Rome would say that he is Roman, not Italian.

The Forum was at least 3 floors down from the current road. Only very little remained of the beautiful marble floors and structures. The Forum was like the modern age park where people got together to talk and to hang around. Imagine if your current city park is covered with expensive marble instead of just cement! Majestic! And think of how they were able to do it: transporting the marble, construction, installation, etc… all without electricity, power or heavy machinery!

Near the forum are maps indicating the area of the Roman Civilization during various times in history. One thing for sure… the Roman Civilization was huge (please see photo below)! At its greatest extent, it covered areas in between Britannia in the North, Spain in the West, Egypt in the South and Syria in the East!

We ended the walking tour at the Colosseum and wow… The Roman really new how to take care of their citizens: free shows and entertainment for the taxes the government gets for their wars and conquests. Animals, objects and anything amazing or different from far places are all brought to Rome for the entertainment of the tax-paying citizens. The Colosseum was huge and for a population of 1 million, I think the Colosseum’s 45,000-55,000 seating capacity is more than enough. Here in Metro Manila, we have at least 10 million people and the biggest stadium that we have (Araneta Coliseum) can only seat at most 24,000+ people! Although the Colosseum is amazing in its current state, a little imagination and some animation/drawings will add even more to the awe. Imagine marble walls and floors, tons of people enjoying themselves with the entertainment being performed down in the center of the Colosseum. The chaos of the cheering audience/crowd, at times probably fighting with each other as well (hehehe)… what I would give to be able to go back in time and document even just one event in the Colosseum (as long as I get to go back safely to my current time :p).

As mentioned before, life in Rome was pretty good even compared to current standards. I think a bigger percentage of the population today have a difficult life in various countries compared to life of the population back in the days of the Romans.

“Considering the times (1^st century, not too much technology, no electricity), life in a Roman city was pretty good. One should be in a decent position in society though; for example if you were a slave, it wouldn’t matter much if you lived in Rome or in some other time. There was food and water, good sturdy homes, transportation, entertainment and even art. You had daily news, specific specialized crafts (butcher, etc) leading to possible careers. You had the protection of the Roman army, you can travel to other places (in the empire), or get to see many foreign things from the conquests of your soldiers. I would never prefer olden times from the current technology age (or even more into the future); but still, probably one of the other best times to be in this world would be in the Roman Empire.”

That night we went to the famous Trevi Fountain where we threw in coins! Our first attempt was a complete failure... we had no prior knowledge that throwing coins in fountains had a special procedure: right hand over left shoulder. We tried again anyway and even had our photo taken. :p We threw in Philippine Peso coins, so the mistake wasn’t too costly :D (Php 0.25 coins, less than USD 0.01 hehehe).

An estimated Euro 3,000 per day is thrown into the fountain! Police is always on the lookout to discourage the regular attempts to steal the coins.

We ended the day with dinner at the Il Giardino di Albino Antica Trattoria. A full Italian dinner! complete with dance and song! And a cast of waiters and performers goofing around keeping the atmosphere happy and fun!

I didn't know the names of most of the dishes as I don't usually eat Italian food. But still, we were very happy for the meats and the bigger quantity of food compared to the usual meals served in Europe.

Rome is a very historical and beautiful place. The current situation of the city is not the most ideal for tourists and historical/architectural appreciation (crowds, traffic, disorder, etc) but with proper readings and information, one can re-live life in the glory days of the Romans and appreciate the beauty of both their city and their civilization.

(On a side note, this will be my last blog entry for our trip to Europe. It took me 6 ½ months to finish all of them and now that it’s all done, I feel both relieved and sad… oh such sweet sorrow :). Thanks to those who took time to read!)

Rome. Oh did my wife mock me the whole time we were there. I was telling her that Rome would be the best city in our European tour, and in many aspects I was wrong. Rome was crowded. Very crowded as in worst than Manila! Traffic was crazy and a car parked on the road with the hazard on means “be right back” (our tour guide tells us jokingly). Our bus had the hardest time maneuvering the streets and even our Italian driver say that he hates driving in Italy and that Italians are the worst drivers.

Even the pedestrian areas were crowded and filled with locals, immigrants (both legal and illegal) and tourists. I felt very unsafe on the streets of Rome and very tense walking around. Trash and pigeon poo was all over the place; I saw cars and sidewalks that were 95% covered in pigeon poo! I passed that particular area underneath the trees (where you could hear hundreds of birds chirping) for just 3 minutes and I was already hit on the shoulder with some poo!

But in some aspects I was definitely right! Rome was beautiful and it just takes some time to adjust/appreciate. Many of the points of interest are thousands of years old and imagination and some history is required to fully appreciate the eroded and ancient structures. Rome is filled to the brim with history and history (as mentioned in my previous posts) matters much.

Upon arriving in the afternoon in Rome, we immediately started on our walking tour. We were passing the streets and the landmarks at a very fast pace set by our Italian tour guide. We later found out that she was rushing us so that we would not miss the chance to enter the Pantheon which was closed to the public at particular times. Some of the places we passed by were (those I was able to take photos of and I remember at least):

1) Spanish Steps

We went down the Spanish Steps from the Trinita dei Monti/Holy Trinity on the Pincio Hill down to the Piazza di Spagna. A meeting place for many people they say. “Let’s meet at the steps” they would probably say to each other.

2) Obelisk of Montecitorio/Solare Obelisk in the Piazza del Popolo

Passed by the Solare Obelisk, as in no time to even take a decent photo. This was one rushed walking tour.

3) Trajan's Column/Colonna Traiana

Carved artistically in a spiral design all the way up the 30 meter high Tajan’s Column is the story of the epic wars of the Romans and the Dacians.

4) Unknown Roman Building

I couldn’t find information about this building on the internet. I remember our tour guide telling us how way back during the Roman time the pillars would be covered in marble. She also showed us the original Roman streets (looking down through some railings at the side of the building) and how it was at least one floor down from the current roads. The old building was still being used (offices I think) and some modern walls and structures were melded into it to make it usable.

5) Pantheon

The Pantheon was formerly a temple to all the Roman gods and currently used as a church since the 7^th century. The Pantheon still is the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome. When I first saw the Pantheon from the outside I told my wife “what’s the fuss about this?” I was getting a bit irritated with all the rushing our tour guide was making us do. But when I entered the Pantheon… “wow” was the only word in my mind. I wasn’t even listening to our tour guide anymore; I just kept firing my camera. This is an example of the acquired taste you need to appreciate Rome. The outside of the Pantheon now is not anything special but centuries ago it was covered in marble! Imagine what it was like way back then; it must have been amazingly beautiful both inside and outside.

I now thank our tour guide for rushing us through most of the other parts of the walking tour since it gave us the chance to enter and dwell a bit in the Pantheon before it closed to the public that night.

An elderly Mexican named Jose in our tour broke down crying in the Piazza di Spagna after coming down the Spanish Steps. The tour was already into its 10^th day or so (walking, riding the bus, packing, unpacking again and again) and the fatigue and frustration (not being able to cope with the pace) finally hit him. We just came from a very long bus trip (one of the longest we had) and then all the rushing from the walking tour probably triggered the whole thing. Poor Jose, I think he felt very much his age at that time and his wife’s situation (Alzheimer’s; the reason they joined the tour actually) added to the frustration. He went through a lot in the tour: He left his glasses in the hotel in UK, his medicine on our second day, he had colds the whole time and finally he fell ill that first night in Rome. The whole tour group was very supportive whether helping him walk around, lending him medicine or watching out for him (in case he gets lost). A good man Jose and a very nice sweet couple him and his wife. I wish for him the very best.

We eventually ended up for early dinner on our own at the Piazza Navona where the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone and the Fountain of Four Rivers can be found. We walked around and tried to look for an asian restaurant for some boiled rice but after finding none settled for Italian pizza type baked products just to fill our stomachs. We didn’t eat a full meal as we remembered a Japanese restaurant near the hotel which we went to for dinner when we got back.

Avilon Zoo

While in our long Christmas holiday in 2008, I had a feeling of unproductiveness especially in terms of my photography. I pushed for a photo-op and we were able to sneak a trip to Avilon Zoo a couple of days before New Year.

There were no clear maps or drawings on how to get to the zoo. I found instructions with landmarks noted from the internet and those were the best we guide we could find. The map supplied by Avilon was misleading as everything seemed near when in fact they were kilometers away! The traffic was heavy and the roads were small going through Montalban on our way to the zoo. Rough roads/trails met us next and after more than an hour from metro manila, we finally reached Avilon Zoo!

Avilon Zoo is (as far as I know) the most complete and world-class (the closest we have) zoo that is open to the public here in the Philippines. There are probably other private zoos of filthy rich families or politicians that can match Avilon but comparing open-to-the-public zoos alone, no one can match Avilon.

Avilon zoo has over 500 species of animals placed strategically in the 3,000 square meter area of the zoo. The roads and walkways were wide and very park-like in nature (similar to zoos in other countries). Though the zoo still lacked enough signs and maybe a free map at least, the organization was much better than the other zoos I have been in here in the Philippines. 500 species though is a bit misleading as most of the 500 are birds or fishes and most of them look pretty much the same.

We did not get a tour guide for our group (since we were also going to take time shooting), and I found that there were not much information written on the cages and pens. I believe that to better appreciate a zoo tour (or any other tour), one should be supplied lots of stories and information.

Avilon Zoo, though being the best the Philippines has to offer at this time, still has the potential to be much better. They seem to be cutting back on manpower (maybe because of the lack of income/funds) so many areas were not so tidy and the aura and color of the animals seemed dull, unhealthy and unloved. We noticed though that the birds and other animals earning income (by charging to have photos taken with them) were better taken care of and had a healthier look to them.

The strength and wealth of a nation can be judged by many things (roads, parks, quality of food, presence of an ocean park, etc) and one of those things are the condition and the beauty of their zoos. Our best zoo is not even government assisted/funded and still far from the zoos of other nations. With a better government (less corruption, more development and better roads to the zoo at least) and proper assistance/funding, Avilon Zoo can become world class and can definitely be something we Filipinos can be proud of.

A friend asked me to shoot their event at BAMF Gym in Sucat. The place was really crowded and hot... I think even my eyeballs where sweating! but still the event was a big success and the heat and sweat were all worth it. The fights were exciting and it was definitely differnet watching live than on TV.

We had a hard time shooting because of the environment and our lack of experience shooting sports. Me and my shooting buds did what we could and at least got a couple of good shots.

It was my first time watching this sport live and I have to say that MMA is intense! There were times when I just watched without taking photos; stunned from the sights and sounds of the pounding, punching and slamming that was happening in the ring.

Here are some shots of the couple at the reception as we were not able to go to the ceremony. The ballroom was decorated simply but very elegantly with mood lighting that suited the design well.

The bride Carlette (the niece of my wife) had a beautiful cheery smile that lit up the room! Her very happy and cheerful demeanor that night made a good atmosphere for the reception.

Weddings are always about the couple and the success of the ceremony/reception (for me) should be based not only on the preparations but more on the smiles and the happy loving emotions flying around the place. Most important of course are those of the couple... Brian & Carlette definitely gave lots of smiles that night and looked very happy together. :)

We visited the Vatican for an afternoon during our 2 day stay in Rome. We entered the Vatican City through the museum entrance from Rome. We had to pass through heavy security and checking at the entrance; similar if not more stringent than international airports. The museum was beautiful and those who have the time could probably spend a day or two at the Vatican, admiring all the works of art and architecture. The walls and ceilings were covered in paintings and tapestries from various eras and Popes. Priceless sculptures and relics are displayed in various sections of the museum. There was a hallway where various parts of Italy were depicted in paintings and tapestries left and right. A particular Pope wanted it that way so that he would see the church’s empire as he walked pass.

We entered the Sistine Chapel at the end of the Museum tour. Photos were not allowed to avoid degradation to the magnificent paintings of Michelangelo and the other artists on the ceiling and the walls. Still, many people would steal photos (even with flashes firing) and continue to talk and chatter despite the constant reminders of the staff to keep silent and that taking photos were not allowed. I myself took no photos as I could easily search for the ceiling and wall paintings on the internet anyway. I hope tourists would learn to be more respectful of the customs and rules of each particular place or country.

After exiting the Sistine Chapel, we were fortunate enough to be able to enter the catacombs where we saw the tomb of John Paul II and St. Peter (the first Pope) as well. We were lucky as the catacombs are not always open for the public. We then exited the catacombs through a narrow staircase and a wonderful surprise met us at the end, we were already in the middle of St. Peter’s Basilica! Our tour guide loves the catacomb entrance to the Basilica as it catches the tourist off guard to the magnificence of the Basilica. The Basilica is truly magnificent and although the catacomb entrance added to the initial beauty, the actual beauty is still very definite even without the flair of the catacomb surprise entrance. Works of art and various important religious sculptures (including the Pieta by the great Michelangelo) and relics are found inside the huge and well maintained church.

We exited the Vatican City through St. Peter’s Square and left the Vatican in awe and revived religious fervor (at least for me :p). All the history and the magnificence made me feel proud of my religion and want to be more active in my duties in the church as a Catholic. Though I found the magnificence and extravagance a bit ironic as the Catholic religion is supposed to be about simplicity and self-sacrifice; it still had a positive effect on me as I am only human who also value wealth and power (to some extent :p). The Roman Catholic Religion is truly an empire that is rich and powerful, even today. The Roman Catholics have done well coming from persecution and exile to amassing so much riches and power. With all these riches, I wish they would support more the Churches in the poorer areas of the world, especially here in the Philippines (the Catholic center of Asia). The stark contrast between the Vatican City and the life of priests and the parishes in some of the provinces here in the Philippines is discomforting. Re-investing the Church’s riches to get more riches is important for future needs of the Church and its people; but it’s all useless if many of the parishes around the world are not supported properly. Isn’t the money supposed to be for the parishes? And if the parishes are not supported well, the Catholic Religion may lose even more people and even priests as well (adding to other factors such as atheism, shifting to other religions, etc).

Traveling south from Rome in our Trafalgar European Cavalcade tour, we arrive at the Ruins of Pompeii near Naples. Pompeii was a thriving city almost 2,000 years ago; until the nearby volcano (which they thought was a mountain) erupted! The whole city with everything in it at that time was buried under 22 meters of ash and dirt. The town was thus preserved under all the ash and provides a snapshot of life in the 1st century! Accidentally discovered in 1652, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and at provides much information about the life in a city of the Roman Empire.

The area of the town was huge and there would be many more excavations to be done in the future. The Italian government has decided to stop excavating first and to concentrate on what they currently excavated already. Travelling with a tour guide or a tl elast some sort of reference is important to help imagine and understand what life was back then. With the help of research, studies, information and points of interest, we can experience as best we could life in the 1st century!

Drawings on walls, graffiti, vandalisms, city design, house layouts, artifacts, furniture and many more priceless pieces of human history were found in the excavations. Casts from the voids left by decayed bodies were made and from there it was deduced that the population did die suddenly from the toxic gases from the volcano.

Other facts (I remembered) from our tour guide:
1)The Romans used lead pipes for their water supply. A slow revenge from the natives of Britain whom the Romans conquered and took the lead from.
2)The roads were also designed as a drainage system with a sloping angle so all the water will flow out of the city.
3)Sidewalks are used so that people will not get wet from the water draining out. Stepping stones / stone blocks with spaces in between are used to cross the street. The stone blocks are spaced in such as way that the chariot wheels can pass through (in between the stone blocks, the space between the wheels of their chariots are standardized!)

4)Water fountains all over the city providing clean water were made available to all the people.

5)We saw at least one arena (small one) and one forum, which seems to be typical in most Roman cities (Rome has them too). Comparing to our time, the forum is like their mall, park or coffee shop. The arenas were like our stadiums for sports and entertainment.
6)There was definite evidence of prostitution and the red light district. Rooms for sex and even sexual positions painted on the walls.

A very good advice: before or after (preferably before) going to Pompeii, one should watch Rome, the TV series from HBO. HBO did a masterful job, depicting life in Rome (and thus Roman cities). The TV series would help the imagination to make the experience of Pompeii truly historical. It was unfortunate that the series was cancelled due to the production being too costly.

Considering the times (1st century, not too much technology, no electricity), life in a Roman city was pretty good. One should be in a decent position in society though; for example if you were a slave, it wouldn’t matter much if you lived in Rome or in some other time. There was food and water, good sturdy homes, transportation, entertainment and even art. You had daily news, specific specialized crafts (butcher, etc) leading to possible careers. You had the protection of the Roman army, you can travel to other places (in the empire), or get to see many foreign things from the conquests of your soldiers. I would never prefer olden times from the current technology age (or even more into the future); but still, probably one of the other best times to be in this world would be in the Roman Empire.

Our Trafalgar European Cavalcade Tour went twice to the main island, the first time in the afternoon on a gondola for some photos and the 2nd day on a rented boat for some more sightseeing and a trip to Burano Island. We visited a glass blowing factory selling very expensive pure Murano (materials and labor from Murano) glass items. We walked through narrow old streets and roamed around Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square) where the Basilica Cattedrale Patriachale di San Marco (St. Mark’s Basilica) is also located. You can see platforms already setup and ready around the basilica and in the square for pedestrians to use just in case the water level goes up during high tide and in particular seasons. We also went to get some rest at a park (Giardinetti Reali/Royal Gardens) around the other side of the square where there were less people and tourists while waiting for our boat to Burano Island.

A lot of pigeons can be found in Venice and especially in St. Mark’s Square. Our tour guide jokes that the square is actually theirs and they just let people pass. They are much protected and so are not afraid of people at all. My wife loves having her photos taken with pigeons and so we fed them some bread (I think my wife just likes to have her photo taken, not necessarily with pigeons only). We got a bit of a warning from a policeman, “no feeding” he said. It was alright since we already took a lot of photos and we ran out of bread.

Since the mega-dam is being built, people no longer need to “go see venice before it sinks”. But still, I hope everyone has a chance to visit the real Venice and feel the aura and the beauty of history it exudes.

Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs)

This bridge is called the Bridge of Sighs because it's the prisoners' last view of Venice of before their imprisonment. This is also where family members waive goodbye to prisoners being led to execution. Local legend says that lovers are assured eternal love if they kiss on a gondola at sunset underneath this bridge. Currently the bridge has been commercialized with the advertisements and the sky/cloud designed walls seen in this photo; much to the displeasure of many Venetians.

Venice! I thought it would be magical (romantic they say) and I think I expected too much. It wasn’t as magnificent the first few moments but after smelling the moist air from the canals and feeling the textures of thousand year old structures; you will definitely feel its beauty.

Venice Romance: Lovers in Piazza San Marco

Some of our Asian tour mates commented that the Venice replica in Macao is much better. The Venice in Macao is newer, cleaner, well maintained for tourism purposes. In the real Venice, the gondola drivers (gondoliers) have jaded attitudes and have jackets over their red and white striped shirts; they aren’t smiling. I don’t think they are happy working this close to winter. No singing from the boatmen either, though our tour hired some singers with a small Italian band to ride with us. The buildings were old, not maintained too well; it’s probably hard to do repairs and construction when you have to transport everything by boat! The canal isn’t smelly or anything, but it doesn’t look clean. Despite all of this, there is always something better about the real thing. It’s an aura that you can’t explain, mostly psychological but a different feeling nonetheless than being in a replica. The atmosphere of thousands year old buildings and structures make my mind wander and start imagining. History is something special; I think everyone can agree to that.

What I found very interesting about Venice is how they go about their daily lives! Everything has to go by boat including people, food and supplies in, garbage out. Everything by boat and Venice doesn’t have giant ports to accommodate giant ships to transport. This has made living in Venice 4 times more expensive than the nearby mainland! Few people actually live in Venice as it’s hard to afford and a bit impractical. There is little transportation inside Venice; when the boat drops you off; you have to start walking! Cars are very limited to a certain part of Venice as they will not fit the old streets. The uneven stones of the side streets and small alleyways would make it difficult for wheelchair users as well. Tourists, policemen, restaurant staff, church staff, and almost everybody ride over water to get to Venice everyday! People go back and forth using water buses, private water taxis or gondolas (only tourists use this).

The Grand Canal which is 90 meters wide has very few bridges (3 or 4) for its 3,800meter length. A simple gondola that accommodates standing pedestrians can be found at certain points along the canal to cross to the other side. It is a short distance and the locals were boarding the gondolas with much ease. Unlike I who held on to the wooden posts of the pier as I went down to the gondola, technically pushing the gondola away from the pier with my foot. I got a short (a bit stern) lesson from the gondolier and so now I know a bit more about riding boats and about how NOT to rock them. I was scared for my camera the whole time actually. I’m no water person; that I am certain of. All of the passengers on the crossing gondola remained standing for the short trip (as sitting down actually rocks the boat a bit as well). They are wearing their suits and office attires carrying important documents and laptops with no worries of the 5 meter deep water beneath their gondola.

Another important fact to note is that Venice is sinking; the water level is going up due to climate change. Quite a number of side streets from the Grand Canal are now smaller canals instead of streets! Imagine having to need a gondola to enter your house as there is not always an elevated sidewalk! Governments and groups are contributing and spending billions of dollars in making a giant dam to keep Venice above water. At first I thought, maybe they should just let it sink, a lot of other people are going hungry, and they could use the billions of dollars. But then again, something in me (and each one of us) also values history and culture. Seems like such a crime to let Venice sink after it has survived for thousands of years. Many things were lost in many wars and tragedies and keeping these ancient structures are very important.

Venice has technically little industry and mainly serves as a tourist destination. It is basically being preserved as a testament to man and his accomplishments over the years. You can actually buy an old building along the Grand Canal or in other parts of Venice for an affordable price; the problem is you have to restore it to its previous form (Venetian design and the works) which is extremely expensive!

We went for a 40 minute motorized boat ride from Venice to the fishing island of Burano! We had a seafood Italian lunch at Cafe Vecio with the works; appetizer, pasta, risotto, meat (fish and shrimp), alcohol (wine and amaretto) and coffee! Although their seafood is no match to the seafood here in the Philippines, one thing that I love about Italy is the Italians’ love for food! Although the type of food is not the same with what we are used to in Asia, the rice, pasta, various spices and sauces is similar enough. Well not really, but after 2 weeks in Europe, any similarity to Asian food is very much welcomed by our stomachs! The serving sizes are bigger as well, much more similar again to Asian servings compared to the simple and small servings in the Germanic countries (Germany, Switzerland, Austria and etc).

We were then given some time to wander around the small town with only 4,000 people! They are a fishing village, and instead of cars, the boats are parked outside their houses in canals. Bridges are used to cross to the other side of the “street” (canal). The houses were painted in bright colors, excellent for photos. I was taking a photo of a local’s house and we rushed away after seeing an old lady frowning at us from inside! The day was overcast though and thus the colors didn’t come out vibrantly in the photos; nevertheless, as tourists, we make do!

The fishing island also produces excellent lace, but I believe nobody in the group bought any. I guess it’s not easy to buy lace; you need some planning (where you are going to use it, how much of it you need, etc). I didn’t even ask for the prices as we just weren’t interested… We wandered around in the shops and purchased a keychain instead; something my wife collects. I also got my mom a Murano candle/flower vase and although not pure Murano (both labor and material form Murano), it was a good piece of glass and not too pricey. We also got some discounts as the tourist season is almost over (winter), and they wanted to sell off their stocks.

Burano is a nice, quiet and relaxing place; very different from the nearby city-like and tourist-packed Venice. Although Burano is too simple and provincial for my living preferences, I still think it is a good place to spend an afternoon or two, just to wander around and relax. :)

After a couple of hours in the Pompeii ruins, we had a quick (greasy and bad) lunch at a food stop near the Naples pier while waiting for our hydrofoil to Capri Island. I’d like to note that this area south of Rome has many similarities to the tropical habits of the Filipinos and other tropical countries. The hanging clothes outside apartment balconies were not uncommon to us Filipinos compared to our Australian tour mates. Playing of cards out in the street, guys just hanging around… similar habits in the tropical islands of the Philippines.

After less than an hour on the hydrofoil, we arrived at Capri Island! Another short trip up the cog rail and we finally reached the posh and high-end Capri town up in the mountains of the island. Expensive cafes and restaurants are found around the area as well as high-end shops with brands I don’t even know (but I know their expensive!). We walked through the shops and up to the Gardens of Augustus where we can see the view from near the top of the mountain.

The pretty early last hydrofoil out of the island (around 6pm) keeps the day trip tourists such as ourselves from staying too late in the town/island. After the day tourists have left, that is when I assume many of the people staying in the town would start to come out and do their shopping, eating and relaxing. After less than an hour in Capri town, we headed back down by cog rail to the pier and there waited for our hydrofoil to arrive. Instead of riding back to Naples, we rode the hydrofoil to Sorrento where we stayed for the night.

It was a nice short experience and although the place was truly posh and luxurious, I would rather spend my time elsewhere. I have always known that I was not made to enjoy nor be part of anything too luxurious, and I have proven this to myself again with my feelings towards Capri. Even if I could afford the very expensive stay and food, I would rather spend my money exploring other places and cultures. A good new experience though; it’s interesting to have a short look at where the very rich spend some of their vacations.

Our last night in Italy was spent in the beautiful city of Florence! If there is one word to describe Florence, it’s ART! Art galleries, priceless works of art, sculptures, even the architecture and the streets exude a classy feeling of art. The beauty of Florence and all its art is from its deep and long history and culture. Florence truly set itself apart from the crowded and dirty feeling of Rome and the uneasy feeling I had in Venice (we were sinking!). In our Trafalgar European Cavalcade tour, Florence was the location that best showed us the beauty of Italy.

Before we entered the city, we passed by Piazzale Michelangelo where a copy of some of Michelangelo’s work are displayed. There is a terrace at the edge of the square where you can see a panoramic view of the city of Florence below.

We then entered the city proper, taking a stroll along the tight streets and entering into the world of art! We went into a couple of museums most notably the Accademia Gallery featuring whom else but the maestro Michelangelo. Our very knowledgeable and attractive tour guide told us about the works and some snippets of the artist’s life. Her love for art and her boyfriend, David, showed in the way she passionately conducts her tours. By the way, her boyfriend David is actually the masterpiece of Michelangelo; sculpted from a bad piece of marble that was neglected for 25 years! Michelangelo forms masterpieces that he carves out from plain blocks of marble. He says that the sculptures are already inside the marble, and he is only helping them get out. He works with no guide nor plaster model to copy; only by instinct and talent!

We passed by other points of interest such as the Piazza della Signoria, where the Palazzo Vecchio (town hall) can be found; in front of which is the original position of Michelangelo’s David. A replica now stands in the original’s place.

We also passed by Florence Cathedral (Il Duomo), the dome of this cathedral is an architectural wonder. Architects and engineers today can only make a good guess on how the Florentines built the massive dome of this cathedral. It was tough to take photos of this cathedral as the streets beside it are narrow and buildings crowd the view as well. The front is wider but there were hundreds of tourists in the area!

Our Florentine tour guide is wondering why the architecturally flawed Leaning Tower of Pisa is getting so much attention compared to the architecturally amazing dome of the Florence Cathedral.

Florentine leather is famous as well as expensive! The pricey stores were too much for us, so my wife found the outdoor stalls that sold at 1/3 the price with no brand but still of excellent leather and quality.

If I had a chance to return to Italy, Florence will be the first place on my list. The afternoon and night spent there was definitely not enough! There is so much more to see and experience in this beautiful city. Living here would probably be a delight! A wonderful mix of the city life (convenience and fast pace), and the history, culture and art.

Interesting Italy! (Verona)

Our first stop in Italy on our Trafalgar European Cavalcade Tour is Verona. Verona marks the first day away from the Germanic countries; and thus away from the order and the predictability and now to the artistic and “anything can happen” areas! Our tour guide repeated her warnings multiple times, talking about pick pockets and snatchers and how the vacation can get ruined with a simple mistake. Despite being from the Philippines and being used to all the crime, we stayed cautious and wary still, just to be sure. :)

we walked a couple of blocks from the drop off point. Interesting how a change in country changes all the rules despite the countries being landlocked together. In Italy, unlike the Germanic countries, crossing on pedestrian lanes does not guarantee that the traffic will stop! Our tour guide says (kidding) that the stoplights in Italy are merely suggestions.

We went to the Casa di Giulietta (Juliet’s House) and took some photos with the famous balcony and the brass statue of Juliet. For luck you need to rub her breasts. I think that to be clear, I should say it outright; the tour guide was a bit more cautious in saying the B word :P.

My wife, who loved having her picture taken in new places, posed with some locals in costume. Unlike in Cologne and in other areas which she did the same, the tip amount was not voluntary; a “suggested” value is given instead. Before, we would give Euro 50 cents or a bit more (a lot of money in our country). Here in Italy they have a small piece of plastic with a Euro 2 coin attached which they show you for the tip amount, AFTER you have taken the photos. My wife tried to give less but they persisted and followed us until we paid the whole amount. That finally taught my wife to avoid such people, and she didn’t make the same mistake with the people in gladiator costumes in Rome. :p

We were then given about an hour to have our lunch and walk around the city. We perused through some of the flea market shops in the middle of the Piazza delle Erbe then stopped for a bit to take our quick lunch (a long full lunch would mean less time to wander around). We tried walking through some side streets and found the Scala dela Ragione / Palazzo dela Ragione / Torre dei Lamberti near the public restrooms. We took a bunch of photos here as there were almost no people around.

Verona was a good stopping point as it was a good testing ground for the whole Italian experience. It was a good wake-up call for those who have become overconfident against pickpockets and swindlers especially coming from a bunch of days in the quite safe and predictable Germanic countries (Switzerland, Germany, Austria, etc). The crowds are bigger, more tourists, traffic signs are ignored, varied people of various nationalities... a different style to say the least!

Our last stop before leaving Italy for good and entering French territory was at Pisa/Piza. We were taken by train (fake train; the one with car wheels) from the coach/bus parking area to the wall of the Piazza del Duomo. From there, we walked a short distance alongside the wall to enter into the Piazza del Duomo or also called the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles).

The Leaning Tower of Pisa can be seen from the entrance, at the far end of the Piazza. One thing I can say for sure; it’s definitely leaning! First thing we did was take photos of us doing our part in keeping the leaning tower from falling. :p

So engrossed were we in taking photos of the tower that I was only able to take limited photos of the other structures inside the Piazza. We were only given an hour or two (minus the bathroom breaks, the walking to and from the meeting point and the buying of souvenirs) to roam the area and so we didn’t have enough time to go inside the beautiful structures.

We went to a surprise party for a friend (Juris) organized by her sister (Ate Yen). It was not easy to set up because although I wasn’t part of the organizing team, I could see how much effort they put into explaining by sms and phone calls to family and friends of what was going to happen and what the celebrant knows and doesn’t know, etc; all to keep the surprise in place.

The surprise went well and all the effort was worth it. Juris seemed really happy and surprised. She actually even had her hair and makeup done because she thought she had to perform that night (she is a singer by profession). The food and the location (a newly constructed house for sale) were perfect as well for a small gathering of family and friends.

I personally don’t like (hate? A little too strong a word :D) surprises and find surprise parties very unpredictable. I for one have told my girlfriend (now wife) never to hold a surprise party for me. I get this bad feeling that I was fooled by everyone and that everyone connived against me. Call me crazy but that’s who I am (obsessive-compulsive (OC) and controlling personality :p). I also find organizing surprise parties very difficult with many things possibly going wrong or possibly blowing the surprise. Nevertheless, I do enjoy the feeling and the atmosphere when a surprise party is successful. Taking photographs of a good surprise is also a treat (and a challenge; on the spot emotions to be captured!).

So again, no surprise parties for me alright? Or am I just saying this so that I am truly surprised; if ever a surprise party is organized for me? Hahaha… my age (maturity) is getting the better of my OC-ness.

Ozinefest Anime Event April 2010

I was finally able to photograph Cosplay (Costume Play) at the Ozinefest Anime Event held at the Megatrade Hall in SM Megamall. We went there to shoot on a Sunday and the mall was packed! People flocked to the malls to escape the crazy summer heat (free air conditioning).

The Megatrade Hall was also packed with fans, Cosplayers and photographers; but I estimate only around 5% (or less) were in costume. I actually expected more people in costume and had even brought my wide lens to shoot the area with all the Cosplayers. When I did try to shoot the crowd with my wide, it didn’t look like any special event; only a lot of people crowded together. :p

I enjoyed the hour and a half that I spent shooting and although it was difficult to shoot with all the people, it was the whole experience that was truly enjoyable. I had various reasons for carrying a smile at least half the time I was there:

1) Very nice costumes and even their poses for photographs are excellent! Some even did some role-playing… I met a Cosplayer who wasn’t replying to my requests and thank you. He was just laughing like the evil madman that he was portraying. Hehehe.

2) Young people having fun with what they love (Anime!)
3) Funny costumes and designs! Some borderline weird (at least to us non-anime people)
4) Really bulky/heavy costumes that seems really difficult to carry and walk around with.
5) Cosplayers walking around the mall in their costumes :D This is the best. Imagine walking around in the mall then suddenly you see some of the characters you know from anime walking around.

Cosplayers can also be found outside the Megatrade Hall (walking in the mall, hanging around, taking photos, having their photos taken, etc.)

6) When I recognize a costume from the few anime shows I watch :)

I watch anime as well but only particular titles and very few (I’m sure) compared to the other people in the event. I could only recognize around 10% of the costumes of the participants. Although I couldn’t really relate to their Cosplay (something I would probably not do), I could see the appeal and I admire their effort, dedication and their love for anime. No matter what most others would say (even their own parents most likely), they have confidence to do what they love without mind of what others think.

Performances on stage, even singing with Japanese lyrics! I wonder if they just memorized or if they really understand...

The whole experience was very interesting and though not on the top of my list, if given the chance and convenience, I would definitely shoot Cosplay in anime events again. Good job everyone! Especially to all the Cosplayers! Keep up the great work!
